The History of Christmas Tree String Lighting
Christmas tree string lighting have been around for as long as we can remember. Any living human being can testify to the fact that lit Christmas trees would always be present in homes and commercial malls since birth.
Humans have developed the desire for their Christmas trees (be it artificial or live) to be lit as early as the 18th century. Back then, trees had to be hand-wired but the effect was still beautiful.
Soon enough, Christmas tree lights became more readily available and they started selling like hot cakes. However, such lights were considered to be an item for luxury due to the effort and complex technology (at that point of time) required to construct such lights.
Fast forward to the 21st century that we live in today, these lights are no longer difficult to attain. As a matter of fact, the variety of string lights that exist today may astonish many. Apart from your conventional green wired Christmas tree lights that requires a power point, battery operated fairy lights have been a huge hit! More consumers are also making the switch from incandescent bulbs to Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs.
Variety of String Lighting
With a very brief explanation on the different factors of variety attributing to such lights, one can only understand why string lights are becoming such a huge hit not only during Christmas, but as an everyday home décor tool.
Types of Technology – Incandescent bulbs are seen as a very conventional form of lighting. When plugged into a power point, light is generated when the tungsten filament wire is heated as a result of the flow of electric current. Today, this conventional form of lighting is less favoured as compared to Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs. Reason being, incandescent lighting requires more electricity and they do not have good longevity. LED bulbs on the other hand, are manufactured to be energy saving and in actuality, it really does consume far less electricity. They are also built to last 40 to 60 times longer than an incandescent bulb would! Feel like making the switch now?
Colours, Shape, and Length – String lighting may come in any possible colour available. The common colours are pure white, warm white, and multi-colour. These cables may also be as short as 1 metre, and as long as a couple of hundred metres! The bulbs may also come in various shapes and sizes. Pointy tips, round, flat, you name it, it probably exists.
Source of Power – For a long time, string lights always had to be plugged into a power source. Thanks to the advancement of technology, we now are able to enjoy the beauty and convenience of battery operated string lights, which are more commonly known as fairy lights.
The Birth of Fairy Lights!
Fairy lights basically mean string lights with small bulbs. They are usually battery operated so that they can be placed anywhere (literally) without having an unsightly connection to a nearby power point. They can even be coiled around your railings, ornaments, or furniture.
With online home décor outlets such as Masons Home Décor selling fairy lights for as low as S$3.00 per set, there is no surprise to why they sell at least 550 sets a day.
